This Nurse Log Woman sculpture was made mid-range clay and glazes. She was first made with solid pieces of clay. Once sculpted, she is then hollowed out to make firing at high kiln temperatures possible. She is then glazed to accentuate all her beautiful imperfections and fired again.
One of my favorite things in the forest is the nurse log. In all of it's beautiful decay and imperfection, it is also source of new life. It gives birth to new, while simultaneously returning into the earth. A sort of metaphor for the old selves we shed. They never leave us, but instead provide a home for the new person we grow into with every day. I hope that we are all able to keep growing into and nourishing our new selves with the wisdom of who we once were.
