This sculptural vase was made using mid-range clay and glazes. I began with a wheel-thrown base. Her "hair" or "trunk" was added as a clay slab. Then, with molding of the primary form, a more face-like shape was created. After this, her unique facial features (nose, mouth, eyes, cheeks, chin) were added and sculpted further. My favorite part is creating her hair. This involves hours of molding, adding and subtracting of clay to create an interesting irregular, organic, tree-like appearance. I love purposefully creating a perfectly imperfect texture. Finally, the piece is glazed to accentuate her hours of sculpting, and all her beautifully imperfect details.
This vase was inspired by a feeling of oneness with all life. Have you ever sat under the shelter of a tree, feeling that in its shelter, it loved you as you loved it? Then you know what I mean.
